As the subsequent phases of the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) barrel towards us, more companies are being mandated to conduct robust sustainability assessments, report on myriad datapoints, and gain external assurance.
Sustainability functions are historically under-resourced and plenty of firms are grappling with how to manage CSRD requirements under a tight budget. A new £50k+ online platform or £100k+ software suite is often not an option.
With several of our clients facing the same challenge, we created an Excel-based application to fill a gap: To manage the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) process, the ESRS datapoint gap analysis and data gathering exercise.
The aim? To save sustainability teams weeks of work!
The workbook has three sections:
Assessing materiality
Mapping & quantitive analysis of the Impacts, Risks and Opportunities (IROs) associated with your business.
ESRS data project management
Identify the required data gaps and manage the data collection from stakeholders across the business.
Progress dashboard
Monitor progress towards 100% data and evidence coverage, broken down by material topic or data owner.
Who is this for?
This tool is for Sustainability Leads and will be most suitable for:
- companies that are aiming for CSRD compliance,
- for those wishing to undertake a practice run for pre-scope CSRD data gathering,
- or to conduct a thorough double materiality assessment.
Our tool has user management, file storage (using your existing cloud systems), multi-user syncing capabilities and some AI-supported drafting features out of the box. More features to support datapoint drafting will be added in time (through automatic updates).
However, if your company is aiming for CSRD differentiation or leadership, or has a lot of integrations with other systems, then a bespoke tool may be more appropriate and worth the significant investment. Get in touch and we can advise on appropriate systems and partners. Similarly, if you need a sexy SaaS tool and you have the budget to spend, then an online platform will be more appropriate.
Features
- Step-by-step process for mapping out your business context, activities and business relationships (best done alongside your core internal team).
- Stakeholder management system to evidence engagement, help identify potential Impacts, Risks & Opportunities (IROs), assess materiality
- We have included pre-built IRO scoring and weightings for quantitative assessment of Financial Materiality & Impact Materiality. These can also be edited to reflect your systems (such as your risk management system).
- EFRAG and lay-speak guidance for 'data owners' for each datapoint to help draft compliant responses.
- Manage the data gathering process, content storage and export all at the end (XBRL tagging and report-generation feature currently in development).
- The workbook is built on a database and automated where possible (e.g. ESRS topics assessed as material then highlight relevant disclosure requirements, evidence files are linked to data owners, stakeholders groups and datapoints etc.)
- The workbook provides an audit trail for third-party assurance to track data sources, follow decisions and assumptions made, and store relevant files (e.g. interview notes, emails, desk research, web links).
- Very little onboarding needed - it is built on our old friend, Excel!
For now, the application is being finalised and tested and will be released for external purchase hopefully in early 2025. We aim to keep the costs low and affordable for companies - our fees are designed to cover the costs for the time we've invested in creating it and to enable us to maintain, update and provide new features. It should be a fraction of the cost of the alternative software out there.
